New York Yankees
New York Yankees 1929 Babe Ruth Authentic Replica Jersey
Also known as “The Great Bambino,” “The Sultan of Swat” or by his given name George Herman Ruth, Babe wore #3 as his uniform number because he was third in the batting order. Although initially climbing to fame on the mound as a dominant pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, it was his time in New York as their right fielder with phenomenal power and vision at the plate that elevated him to his perch atop the baseball world as the greatest baseball player of all time. Following his sale by the Red Sox to the rival New York Yankees, the "Curse of the Bambino" would shift the fortunes of both teams immensly, with the Yankees dominating baseball for many years, while the Red Sox, who had won 5 of the first 16 World Series, did not win another pennant until 1946 and would not win another World Series until 2004 - a span of 86 years.
Throughout his unbelievable career, Ruth was a huge fan favourite the likes of which baseball had never seen. His ability to smash home runs over an estimated distance of 500 feet (a feat that is still rare and immensly impressive today) only further cemented him in the eyes of fans everywhere. Although not as physically fit as many of his teammates and competitors, Ruth used his large stature to crush the baseball at every opportunity. He would finish his career with phenomenal statistics: 2,873 base hits, 714 home runs, 2,213 RBIs, a .342 batting average. His 714 home runs would stand as a sacred Major League record for 39 years, until broken by the legendary Hank Aaron on April 8, 1974. Furthermore, his pitching stats were equally impressive, with a career record of 94 wins and 46 losses and an Earned Run Average of 2.28. Being considered the greatest baseball player of all time must come with accolades, of which Ruth has many: 2x All-Star (1933-34), 7x World Series Champion (1915, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1927, 1928, and 1932), AL MVP (1923), AL Batting Champion (1924), 12x AL Home Run Leader (1918-21, 1923-24, 1926-31), and 6x AL RBI Leader (1919-21, 1923, 1926, 1928). Finally, Ruth was named to both the All-Century and All-Time MLB Teams and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
