Additional Product Information
Three Rivers Stadium opened in 1970 as home to the Steelers and Pirates, and is named for its location where the Alleghany and Monongahela Rivers meet to become the Ohio River. Like many stadiums in the 1960-70s, it followed the "cookie-cutter" or "concrete donut" design trend such that its structure was perfectly circular and made to transition easily between baseball and football playing fields. From 1972 until the Stadium's closing in 2000, the Steelers sold out every home game. During that timespan, Three Rivers also hosted seven AFC Championships, four of which led the Steelers to win the Super Bowl in the 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979 seasons. Thus, Steelers fans had witnessed many triumphs in Three Rivers but nothing compared to the AFC Divisional playoff game on Decemebr 23, 1972, during which the controversial "Immaculate Reception" play took place. In the last thirty seconds of the game, quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a pass to John Fuqua who lost possession of the ball but, before it touched the ground, Franco Harris grabbed it and ran for a game-winning touchdown. Forty years later, a monument was installed in what is now a parking lot to commemorated the spot where Harris made the reception.
