The Quebec Nordiques were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City, Quebec, that played in the NHL from 1979 to 1995. The team was one of the NHL's "Expansion" teams in 1979 when the league expanded from 16 to 21 teams, adding franchises in cities like Quebec City, Hartford (Whalers), Edmonton (Oilers), and Winnipeg (Jets). In 1995, the Quebec Nordiques were sold and relocated to Denver, Colorado. The franchise was renamed the Colorado Avalanche.
